How We Utilize Custom Post Types on Our WordPress Sites

High Effect Web Design is always looking for ways to make websites easier to manage, easier to scale, and more efficient for our clients. One of the most powerful tools we use is WordPress Custom Post Types combined with Advanced Custom Fields (ACF).

As websites grow, managing everything through traditional pages and blog posts can quickly become repetitive and inefficient. By creating custom content structures, we can streamline website management, reduce development time, and make future updates significantly easier for both our team and our clients.

The goal isn’t to use Custom Post Types everywhere. It’s to recognize when content is repetitive, structured, and likely to grow, then build the website so managing that content stays simple.

Here are some of the most common ways we use Custom Post Types and ACF:

1. Employee Directories

One of the most common ways we use Custom Post Types is for employee and team member sections.

Businesses are constantly growing. Employees join, move into new roles, or leave the company. Rather than manually editing page layouts every time a change occurs, we can create a dedicated Employee Custom Post Type that allows staff members to be added, edited, or removed from one central dashboard.

Each employee profile can include structured fields such as the employee’s name, position or title, headshot photo, short biography, social media links, license information, and contact details. Because every employee follows the same structure, the website can display them consistently throughout the site.

This makes future updates much easier while keeping team pages clean, professional, and organized.

This is an example of a custom employee system we built for Body Heal Therapy. On their “Our Therapists” page, each therapist has a dedicated profile card featuring a headshot, name, position, license number, and a button to view the full profile.

When a user clicks on a therapist, they are brought to that therapist’s individual profile page where they can learn more about the provider and, when applicable, book a service with them.

2. Service Pages

Certain industries have service offerings that follow a similar format but still benefit from having separate pages for users and search engines.

A good example is our work with wildlife control companies such as Advanced Wildlife Control and Health’s Wildlife. These businesses handle many different animal species, and each service may need its own dedicated page.

Instead of manually creating every page from scratch, we can build an Animal Service Custom Post Type with structured fields for information such as the animal name, description, common problems caused, removal methods, prevention tips, and related images.

Once that information is entered, a pre-built dynamic template displays it in a consistent service-page layout.

This allows us to create and manage larger groups of service pages more efficiently while maintaining consistency across the website.

3. Portfolio and Project Showcase Systems

Another common use for Custom Post Types is project portfolios. Many of our clients regularly complete new projects and need an easy way to showcase their work without rebuilding page layouts every time.

By creating a dedicated Portfolio Custom Post Type, we can give clients a simple interface to upload photos, add project details, and publish new portfolio entries that automatically follow the design of the website.

We use this approach for contractors, landscapers, deck builders, home service companies, and even our own website. Each project can include structured fields for location, services performed, project descriptions, images, categories, and before-and-after photos.

This makes project libraries easier to manage and can also support SEO by making it easier to publish and organize useful, project-specific pages that search engines can crawl and users can discover.

4. Town and Service Area Pages

For businesses that genuinely serve multiple communities, well-developed location pages can help users find relevant information about the services available in their area.

Without a structured system, building and maintaining those pages can become repetitive. Each page may require updates to headings, service information, local details, images, internal links, and metadata.

By creating a Town Landing Page Custom Post Type, we can manage service-area pages much more efficiently. Structured fields can include the town name, county, service descriptions, local landmarks, unique content sections, and other location-specific information.

The website then uses a dynamic template to display that information consistently while still allowing each page to contain meaningful, unique content.

This approach reduces production time and makes future updates easier because some design and structural changes can be applied globally through the template rather than editing every page individually.

Just as importantly, the goal is not to mass-produce nearly identical location pages. Each town page should provide genuine value and reflect the services, geography, or information relevant to that specific area.

Why We Use Advanced Custom Fields

Advanced Custom Fields gives us the flexibility to build highly customized content structures without creating complicated editing interfaces for our clients.

Rather than forcing business owners to edit code or work inside complex page-builder layouts, ACF allows us to create clean, user-friendly fields that show clients only the information they actually need to update.

This can lead to faster website management, more consistent content formatting, easier staff training, improved scalability, and reduced development time as the website grows.
